Just ahead of Amazon’s Sept. 6 press event, photos have surface of a purported new Kindle Fire and Kindle Touch. (Amazon hasn’t officially announced either device.)
The photos, which first appeared on the Verge, show a purported Fire that doesn’t look exactly like the PlayBook. It gets a tiny upgrade in terms of design, but it still looks like a tablet slab. The photos of the claimed touch shoe a device sporting a new glowing-screen feature, which, if accurate, mean users will finally be able to read their Kindles in the dark without an accessory attached.
Amazon is rumored to be working on two versions of the Kindle Fire, a 7-inch model that would replace the current Kindle Fire that Amazon sold out of on Thursday and a 10-inch model that would go head-to-head with the iPad in both size and power, thanks to a rumored quad-core processor. Intriguingly, the new photos also show a front-facing camera in one of the longer sides of the bezel.

Until now, Amazon’s e-readers have gotten less rumor love. But the Verge claims the new Kindle Touch will feature a back-lit screen, known as Paperwhite, that reportedly has higher resolution and contrast than current Touch screen, and will last for eight weeks on a single charge — all good news for fans of e-ink reading. In these photos, the case looks to have a darker bezel, and the button below the screen has either been removed or incorporated into a Kindle logo now in its place.
